There are many types of disasters, earthquakes, floods, fires … to name just a few. These are the big ones that affect large numbers of people. There is a small one that only affects one person, but can cause concern for our large community. It is called myocardial infarction, or HEART ATTACK! As our community gets older, heart attacks become a larger risk.
At the last Vestry meeting, Jill Buono of the Disaster Preparedness Team presented information on a device that can literally save a heart attack victim’s life. It is called an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). They are being seen in more and more public places. They are almost standard equipment on airliners.
While St James’ is investigating what it will take to have one onsite, we’re not going to buy one at this time. The cost is approximately $1800, and the subject needs more study. One concern is that though it is extremely simple to operate, the operator should be trained.
