(Held over from December) Issues surrounding animal rights are much in the news. Attitudes range from, \u201cWe can do anything we want with animals,\u201d to \u201cAnimals should have the same rights as people,\u201d and everything in between. In \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d we will examine the issues of animal care and animal rights that are currently in the news and debated in law. Then we will examine what our scriptures have to say about animals and human responsibility for them, what the Christian tradition and Christian leaders have taught about them, and how we have arrived at our own beliefs and actions regarding animals. Much discussion is encouraged! Don\u2019t worry; nobody will try to turn you into a vegan or even a vegetarian! That\u2019s not what this is about. But our religious tradition is rich with wisdom regarding our relationship with animals that is either unknown or has been mostly ignored. \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d comes from the title of Elizabeth A. Johnson\u2019s book, Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love<\/em>. She takes the title for her book, written in honor of the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s Origin of Species<\/em>, from the book of Job where Job responds to his accusers with, \u201cAsk the beasts and they will teach you, ask the birds, and they will tell you.\u201d (Job 12:7)<\/p>\n

Although the book is recommended, reading it is NOT required for the class. (It can be obtained from your favorite bookseller in both e-book and paperback for under $20: Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love<\/em> by Elizabeth A. Johnson (Bloomsbury Continuum, (2014).)<\/p>\n
