As a born and raised Episcopalian, regular worship with the family was important and the 3 of us went along with Mom on most Sundays. However, over the years–teenage, college, careers–took its toll. Sundays became classroom work days, or just quiet days. I always thought I would commune with Christ on my hikes and visits to the beach, and I knew he was there for support. Something was missing and it was time to update my spiritual profile, certainly not on Facebook, but with my new community at St. James’.So, last year I began a new journey—reaffirmation–to a better understanding of my Church and Christ’s teachings. Although I have attended St. James’ for the past 30 years, I made the big step and signed those Membership papers, and Wow it was a big day for me! I felt more like a real Church member and I found a new interest in regular worship.
Regular worship means listening to collects, prayers of the people, as we pray for all those in need in our lives and the greater community of Christ, the lessons, the Choir, the Gospel and Sermons. I must say Sermons certainly have a greater meaning for me. I love the scholarly sermons because they present the history of Christ and his teachings, as well as the quiet homilies about life. I remember when Pastor Lori asked us to pray for the people in Aleppo, Syria….this is when I knew I had my place.
This might be a simple answer to why regular worship is important, but worship leaves me with thoughts on how to be a better person in our community–loving all our brothers and sisters, opening our heart, and as the dismissal prayer says “rejoicing in the power of the spirit as we go forth and do good works.” Finally, without regular worship where would I hear all of that and “praise God from whom all blessings flow….”
